Mooring chase !
This morning, we finish the CTD and water sampling
over Kveithola trough, which was our primary objective. Then, we had to sail
along our secondary objective location along the south-west coast of Spitsbergen
island. There, we will recover and perform maintenance on 2 moorings. This
concern another team, the DEFROST team, that sail with the BURSTER team on the
Polarstern.
But what a mooring is ? It´s many instruments (CTD
recorder, sediments trap, current speed-meter) deployed along a cable fixed on
the ocean floor, and which stay in vertical position thanks to many buoys.
We arrived over the 1st position around
16:00, and then, a signal was sent in order to release the mooring from its
ballast. Less than 10 minutes after, we see the orange buoy 500 m from the
boat. Less than half an hour after, the whole dispositive was on the deck. The
DEFROST team is happy, as they have recovered their instrument. They will do
that on one other mooring, and then deploy a new one before we arrive to
Longyearbyen.
Ce
matin, les derniers prélèvements d´eaux profondes ont eu lieu au niveau de la
vallée Kveithola, notre premier objectif. A présent, il nous faut rejoindre le
second objectif, situé près de la côte sud-ouest de l´ile de Spitzberg. Là-bas,
nous aurons à récupérer et entretenir 2 moorings. Ceci est le travail d´une
autre équipe, l´équipe DEFROST, qui voyage avec l´équipe BURSTER sur le
Polarstern.
Mais
au fait, c´est quoi, un « mooring ? Il s´agit de plusieurs
instruments (mesures de conductivité, salinité, température, vitesse/direction
des courants + piège à sédiments) fixés le long d´un câble et amarré au fond de
l´océan, maintenu en position verticale grâce à une série de bouées.
Nous
sommes arrivés au niveau du 1er vers 16h, et alors, un signal fut
émis pour libérer le mooring de son amarre, moins de 10 minutes plus tard, on a
repéré une bouée orange flottant à 500 m du navire. Moins d’une demi-heure plus
tard, l’ensemble du dispositif était à bord ! L’équipe DEFROST était soulagée, leur premier
instrument est intact. Ils répéteront cette procédure sur un autre mooring,
puis en installeront un nouveau avant qu’atteigne Longyearbyen.
A caccia di mooring!
Questa mattina si svolgono gli ultimi prelievi di
acque profonde nel truogolo di Kveithola, che era il nostro obiettivo primario.
Ora dobbiamo raggiungere il nostro secondo obiettivo, situato vicino alla costa
sud-occidentale dell’isola di Spitsbergen. Laggiù dovremo andare a recuperare e
controllare 2 mooring. Questo è il compito di un’altra squadra, la squadra
DEFROST, che viaggia insieme alla squadra BURSTER a bordo della Polarstern.
Ma che cos’è un mooring? Si tratta di più strumenti
(per misurare conduttività, salinità, temperatura, velocità/direzione delle
correnti, per raccogliere sedimenti) fissati lungo un cavo trattenuto da una
zavorra sul fondale e mantenuto in posizione verticale grazie ad alcune boe.
Siamo arrivati nella prima posizione verso le 16, e
a quell punto è stato lanciato un segnale per sganciare il mooring dalla sua
zavorra: dopo meno di 10 minuti abbiamo visto una boa arancione a 500 m dalla
nave. Meno di mezz’ora più tardi l’intero dispositivo è sul ponte. La squadra
DEFROST è felice di aver recuperato lo strumento intatto. Ripeteranno la stessa
procedura con un altro mooring, poi ne caleranno uno nuovo prima di arrivare a
Longyearbyen.
