Arriving at Longyearbyen

This morning, everybody has to pack its personal luggage as we arrived at our final destination, Longyearbyen, the only town in all the Svalbard islands. Everybody is quite excited, and also sad. We are all outside, taking pictures of the snowy mountains or the people we worked with during this cruise. We met really amazing people, each of them have his/her personality, and it was a pleasure to be in this ship with them, to work and live together !

As the Polarstern cannot arrive at a pier, we have to disembark with inflatable boats. We have to wear a safety vest, and climb down the hull of the ship, and then the boat goes fast to the ground. We were lucky that the sea were quiet, so we don't get wet !

After that, we have to wait our respective flights. Some of them are in a few hours, others during the night or the next days for those who decided to stay a while, discovering the Spitsbergen island. Most of the Eurofleets2 BURSTER and DEFROST team gather in a small pension at Longyearbyen. We spend our afternoon in the city and around but we are warned : don't go farther alone an without a rifle, there is many polar bears in this place, more than inhabitants...!

At the evening, we share a big last meal, Italian-style spaghetti cooked by some of us (Thanks to Adriano and Renata). This was a very warm moment, concluded with many goodbyes as everyone quit to catch his/her plane.

Now the field work is over, scientists have to wait for their stuff, packed in containers which will arrived in November in Italy. Then, they can proceed to their final analysis. The task of both Eurofleets2-BURSTER and DEFROST team is not over ! Thanks to this work, many scientific articles about their discoveries will be published during the next months.

We will finish by special thanks to the Eurofleets 2 program, the EGUm the AWI, and all the Polarstern crew.

Thanks to everybody who have followed us during this amazing cruise !

Arrivo a Longyearbyen !
