A mud volcano under the ocean.
Today, the scientific team decides to make a little
detour in order to tests the geophysical instruments. There is 3 of them :
First is an echosounder,
which works like a SONAR. Fishermen use the same device, but we use it in a
different way than them !
We also used a "Multi-beam" instrument, which is able to map the ocean floor in a 130-meters fan-shaped surface under the ship.
And finally, we will use a sub-bottom profiler also called "Parasound", which can
produce images of the first tenth to hundred meters of the sediment cover.
So, we sail over a well-studied area, called the Håkon
Mosby mud volcano. The Parasound device was able to detect it (see picture
below). Even if we won't study it, this was a good test for tomorrow. Indeed, we
shall reach our primary objective, the Kveithola Trough at the morning.
Aujourd'hui,
l'équipe scientifique a décidé de faire un petit détour afin de tester les
instruments géophysiques. Nous allons en utiliser 3 différents :
Le
premier est l'"echosounder",
qui est similaire à un sonar. Les pêcheurs en sont équipés, mais nous
l'utilisons avec des réglages différents.
Nous
allons utiliser le "Multibeam",
un instrument qui balaie avec plusieurs faisceaux le fond sous-marin en un cône
de 130 mètres sous le navire.
En
dernier lieu, nous testerons le dispositif de profilage sous-marin, aussi
appelé "Parasound". Il
peut réaliser des images par réflexion sismique des 10 à 100 premiers mètres
sous le fond de l'océan, à travers la couche de sédiments.
Du
coup, nous sommes passés au dessus d'un secteur déjà bien décrit par d'autres
scientifiques, le volcan de boue Håkon Mosby. Le Parasound a produit une image nette de cette structure
(cf. image). Même si nous nous y attardons pas, ce fut un test concluant pour
demain. En effet, nous atteindrons notre objectif principal, la vallée sous
marine Kveithola en début de matinée.
Un vulcano di fango sottomarino
Oggi il gruppo di ricerca ha deciso di fare una
piccola deviazione per testare gli strumenti geofisici. Ne abbiamo utilizzati
tre differenti.
Il primo è stato l'"echosounder", che funziona come un sonar. È lo stesso
strumento che usano i pescatori, che noi però abbiamo utilizzato per altri
scopi!
Abbiamo anche usato il "Mutibeam", uno strumento che scansiona a ventaglio il fondale
al di sotto della nave.
Infine utilizzeremo il sub-bottom profiler, anche chiamato "Parasound", in grado
di produrre immagini fino ad un centinaio di metri di profondità della
copertura sedimentaria.
Quindi siamo transitati al di sopra di un'area ben
conosciuta, il vulcano di fango Håkon Mosby, che il Parasound è stato in grado
di rilevare (vedi immagine sopra). Nonostante non sia oggetto del nostro
studio, è stato un buon test per domani, infatti la mattina dovremmo raggiungere
il nostro obiettivo principale: il Kveithola Trough (solco glaciale).
